Dates to Remember:
Classroom Business
I have extended the book order due date to Monday. You can order on-line or send it in to me.
We are looking for someone who would be willing to help organize the lunch for Walk Through California (see the details following and in the attached letter). Please contact either Britt or Kerrie if you are interested in organizing/coordinating.
Next Friday is our annual assembly celebrating diversity and brotherhood in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. This is always a very memorable morning. The 4th grade will be performing a song we have adapted from Bette Midler. We are hard at work tuning our voices and preparing our stage presence. We would love to have you join us from 8:45 – 10:00 am next Friday (1/25/08) in the Theater.
Social Studies
Walk Through California:
Hopefully you have heard about our upcoming special presentation. Monday, February 4th we will be participating in an interactive Journey through California’s history. The children will be put into teams that will try to earn points by listening attentively, knowing vocabulary and geography related to California and participating appropriately. In addition teams can earn points by wearing costumes related to California vocabulary or history in general. These costumes need not be elaborate and should be able to be put together from what is already on-hand. We did amazing things with tissue paper and construction paper last year. The point of the costumes is to get the kids excited and into the presentation. I will be showing examples from last year and brainstorming ways students can put simple costumes together.
Following our presentation A-4 and our class will have a potluck Fiesta Lunch. Please see the attached letter, a hard copy is also in the students’ Friday folders. It’s a great morning. We hope you will be able to help/join us.
In addition to preparing for Walk Through California we have also moved on in the curriculum to learning about the Time of Exploration and those explorers who came to California. Students will be researching one specific explorer, taking notes on his life as well as why he is important to us. With the research students will be creating a report that includes a written component about his life and importance, a hand drawn portrait, a time line (using a software program called Timeliner in the computer lab) of his life as well as a map showing the routes he used in his explorations. They are excited about it.
Thank you for everything you do!
