Using Google
Some Helpful Hints

  1. Start with Middle School Research Page Topic Links J

  2. Use "…" (quotation marks) around a word or a phrase that you want Google to use to search

  3. Use only a few keywords and put the most important keyword first.

  4. Use OR if you want Google to find either word (OR must be capitalized or Google will ignore it)

  5. Use - (minus sign) if you don't want Google to find a word

  6. Use intitle: it will make Google find the word in the title of the site

  7. Use define: when you are looking for very specific information about a word

  8. Use Google Images when you are looking for pictures

  9. Use site: .. it limits your search to .com or .org or .edu or use -site: to not get .com sites

  10. Use * -- it acts as a "wild card" ..it can mean any word, so if you don't know an exact phrase, you can put in * where you don't know the word.

  11. Use #..# -- use two dots between numbers to set a range. Include a word, too, so Google knows what the range of numbers is about!

  12. Use ~ -- put a tilde (~) before a word and Google will look for any synonyms. Especially useful if you are looking for other keywords for your topic.

  13. Use related: -- put in front of a url to find related websites
