for Teens - The
Science Behind Drug Abuse
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), created
this Web site to educate adolescents ages 11-15 (as
well as their parents and teachers) on the science behind
drug abuse. NIDA enlisted the help of teens in developing
the site to ensure that the content addresses appropriate
questions and timely concerns.
Marijuana, nicotine, ecstasy and steroids are the first
drugs featured on this site. A primer on "The Brain
and Addiction" summarizes the key concepts about
how drugs affect the brain and defines addiction as
a brain disease. Facts on different drugs will be added
every few months (stay tuned for sections on inhalants
and stimulants next), so please check back often.
