About Ms. Debbie

What's not to love about teaching kindergarten? I have the opportunity to be surrounded by little bundles of energy, eager to learn and full of endless smiles and creativity. Each year I look forward to meeting new families and spending more time with familiar friends. There's always something new to try and something new to be learned. Moreover, I teach at Escondido which has a truly unique, multicultural community.

My background in teaching is varied. I graduated with a BA in Speech and Hearing from UCSB and received my teaching credential from SFSU; during my student teaching I taught in a fourth grade class. I have substituted in grades K-8, as well as taught first, second, fifth, and sixth grade before coming to Escondido. Since coming to Escondido, I have taught kindergarten and a K/1 class.

My philosophy of teaching is that it's very important to teach children through a developmentally appropriate program. It is also important to keep informed of the latest successful techniques/programs and incorporate them into the program. I work hard to provide a stimulating environment that encourages active/hands-on learning and many choices of content and style. Every child and volunteer has a special contribution to make and it is most welcome.

Besides teaching, I have a variety of other interests. I like to read and cook. In addition, I enjoy running, skiing, aerobics, hiking, dancing, swimming, and biking. (Keeping active helps me to keep up with these active kindergartners!) I am blessed with a wonderful husband, Nick, who enjoys being outdoors and shares many of the same interests.
